Volunteer Work Exchanges With Husky Dogs

Embark on a journey where the thrill of adventure meets the warmth of companionship. This is what will make your volunteer work exchange with huskies an unforgettable experience. Though the typical experience is the breathtaking landscapes and crisp Arctic air of the Nordic countries, work exchanges with husky dogs can be found in other countries too, especially in North and South America.

Help us with our husky dog business in the heart of Lapland, Finland

This Italian couple moved from Rome to Lapland, where they have built a business around their 40 Siberian huskies and Alaskan malamutes. They offer payment for your help and playing with puppies is part of the job description. Or live with Leila in a traditional Finnish wooden house in the middle of the forest where howling from the dogs is part of the nightlife. If you have a driving license, you can borrow the car once she is sure you can survive winter driving.

Adventure sled dogs in Lapland – Siberian Husky & Samoyed Team, Norrbotten, Sweden

Enjoy mid summer “white nights” where the sun does not completely disappear from the horizon. Sabine and Frank, from Austria and Switzerland, will show you their home a few kilometres from the Arctic Circle in return for helping with their 20 Siberian huskies and samoyeds. They warn this is not a glamorous job. It can be exhausting as the work can be quite physical, but past volunteers say it is totally worth it, recommending staying as long as you can to build a relationship with the dogs.

Or learn from Craig, a Scot living in Lapland for a decade with his 60 dogs, to drive a 4WD ATV in offroad conditions through beautiful forests. A paid opportunity in Sweden is also possible with Frasse in Orsa.

Help with horses and huskies in Pino Hachado, Neuquen, Argentina

Volunteer here and you will be able to improve your Spanish, learn more about Argentinan cowboys and sled dog racing  – a combination we suspect won’t be found in many other places. These hosts describe themselves as not a typical workaway, wanting volunteers to work hard alongside them in the mountains where the power comes from solar panels and water is taken straight from a stream.

Help us at the husky kennel in Rõuge, Estonia

Johanna and Rain always wanted a big family and by counting in their 57 dogs it’s pretty big at 64 members. They would like a couple, preferably aged over 25, to help with the dogs from head to toe; from cleaning the poop to taking their guests on a sled dog tour. They also have a lot of building, building and more building going on, plus rabbits, chikens and goats to feed. Accommodation is in a treehouse.

Volunteer with Husky tours in Lapland, Norway

Living within a landscape of mountain cabins, scattered Sami settlements and a wilderness inhabited by reindeer, moose, bear, arctic fox, eagle, lynx, and wolverine, is part of the job description here. What work you will find awaiting when you arrive in Norway will depend on the time of year but being part of a husky team is physical and demanding so above average fitness is required. This position is paid. Other options in Norway can be found near Alta, considered the northernmost city in the world.  Here there may be summer opportunities for the right people to get involved with either a small 16 dog husky kennel or a race dog kennel with 25 Alaskan huskies.

Help with our Husky Farm in Lonquimay, La Araucanía, Chile

Luis, a trail runner and musher, is developing different types of tours with dogs in the mountains of southern Chile. He is looking for help with the huskies, cabin, and life in general on the mountain and farm. Another option to experience remote life on a husky farm in the same region can be found here.

For nature and animal lovers: join a family at peaceful Otter Lake, Canada

Along with their own jobs, Sylvain and Caroline divide their time between their small vineyard and orchard, and a dog sledding business. Volunteers here could be picking fruit, painting buildings, or feeding the dogs. Or visit Josh in Alberta. He likes to teach sled dog culture and what it takes to get on a sled and enjoy the ride.

Help walk and play with a beautiful Husky near Melbourne, Australia

Want somewhere warmer, less isolated, with only one dog to contend with and more kangaroos? You’re welcome.
