Fruit picking is, if not the favourite, one of the easiest ways to find a job in Australia and New Zealand. In fruit picking regions hostels can fix up work for travellers, take them to and from the fields and tuck them in bed after they return knackered from their labours. A few such hostels are listed below:
AUSTRALIA
Ayr Backpackers – Ayr, Queensland
Workers are wanted from March to December.

Banana Barracks – Tully, Queensland
Close to sugarcane, pumpkin, papaya, watermelon, and banana farms, this hostel describes itself as one of the few hostels in Australia that can provide farm work for working holiday makers all year round.

Barron Valley Hotel – Atherton, Queensland
Describes itself as a fabulous pre-war hotel and a place that can find work for backpackers almost all year round through its association with local farmers, mostly of avocados and bananas.

NEW ZEALAND
Hideaway Lodge
Wiroa Road, Kerikeri, Bay of Islands (map).
Hone Heke Lodge – Kerikeri, Bay of Islands
We stayed here a long time ago when we were in New Zealand. Although we weren’t looking for work, from what I remember, the rooms were well equipped for long stays and the (then) owners would pick travellers up at the bus stop and also take workers to and from jobs.

The Rotten Apple – Hastings, Hawkes Bay
At the height of the apple picking season (February – May), there are plenty of positions to be filled, and tourists holding a working holiday visa make up a considerable number of them. They offer a work finding service for Hastings.
