With a booming and male dominated population, adolescent girls and vulnerable women are taking a back seat in India’s society. By volunteering on Kaya’s Women Empowerment Project in Himachal, you can help to address some of India’s main equality issues working to right the balance of power between men and women. As the population continues to grow at such a rapid pace, it has never been more important to address the needs of India’s rural female population and sow the seeds for a more empowered and confident feminine society.
As with many nations across the globe, Indian women suffer from disproportionate educational and employment opportunities compared to their male counterpart. Volunteers are desperately needed to provide meaningful hands on support with conversational English, teaching and mentoring, increasing self-esteem and self-worth; ultimately working to improve educational and employment possibilities. Volunteers can also help in the struggle to increase adequate health awareness drives, and can be an active part of creating and delivering creative campaigns which serve to educate the local community in aspects such as safe sex, breastfeeding, hygiene and Iodine Deficiency Disorder amongst young children.
Volunteers will be required to engage with a number of different activities and be sympathetic to the needs of the community during the project. Activities will include teaching and developing conversational, written and oral English, as well as support with computer literacy in an ever increasing technological world. Your presence alone will work to motivate and inspire young girls and at risk women, striving to better their education and their prospects in life. An aspect of your day-to-day volunteering activities may include mentoring, confidence building, self-esteem boosting and helping the women to feel more fulfilled, independent and empowered.
