Nek Chand Foundation, Rock Garden, India

INDIA / Nek Chand Foundation

The Rock Garden, Chandigarh, India, is a fantasy world of sculptures, waterfalls and huge swings created by artist, architect and engineer, Nek Chand. The Nek Chand Foundation is a registered charity that aims to protect and complete the Rock Garden and to support Nek Chand in his work. The range of activities of the Nek Chand Foundation include providing information and raising awareness of this environmental and artistic masterpiece, repairing and making sculptures, and organizing volunteer trips.

Volunteers stay at the Rock Garden for one month in November or Feb/March each year and can participate in activities from creating the world’s largest mosaic with concrete and recycled tiles, to picking up trash, or documenting the Garden. Volunteers pay for travel to the Rock Garden, Chandigarh, and £200 towards the work of the Nek Chand Foundation, which is staffed entirely by long-term volunteers. Meals and accommodation are provided, as well as some local assistance. Volunteers should be fairly practical and flexible, and independent enough to decide what work to undertake.
