There’s a decent number of organisations in Tanzania looking for volunteers without charging high fees, so expect more listings to added to those below soon. Volunteer/Intern visas are required in Tanzania, starting from US$250 for three months (US$300 if you are a US citizen).

Trade Aid

Trade Aid is a small UK charity aiming to create sustainable employment by providing opportunities for work and encouraging enterprise in the local area, and through the teaching of English and vocational skills. They welcome mature volunteers with specialist skills such as accountancy, IT, tourism and teaching who train local staff in that skill. Volunteers are usually on a one year contract extendable by mutual agreement.
Where: Mikindani, Southern Tanzania.
Accommodation: Travel, accommodation and a modest monthly allowance are provided.
The Foundation for African Empowerment

FAE aims to improve access to education for children with disabilities in Tanzania through providing support services, awareness raising and advocacy. You can get involved in their activities by either volunteering in their offices or projects, or with local partner institutions whose activities supplement or complement FAE’s mission. Current opportunities to volunteer are provided here.
Where: FAE focus their efforts on Chemka Village in Hai District, Enjoro Maasai Community in the Arusha Rural District, and Shangarai Village in Meru District.
Accommodation & Costs: There isn’t a volunteer fee and accommodation is provided.

Viva Tanzania

Whether helping in a kindergarten teaching and playing with the children, gaining medical experience in a hospital or planting vegetables with street children, volunteers are welcome to help support their Tanzanian teams. Volunteer work depends on the skills and the interest volunteers and on the demand and needs of the projects they are supporting. Education volunteers mainly assist the teachers and help out with any work like cleaning, cooking, beautifying the kindergarten or school. Teaching English to street children or women in a safe house is also possible. Other projects include empowering women by helping them to generate their own income through producing jewelry and scarves. Viva also support an animal shelter and conservation projects.
Where: Arusha.
Accommodation & Costs: A registration fee of €200 is requested, plus €110 per week programme fee for shared hostel accommodation or with a host family.(€160 per week for accommodation in a single room). Meals are usually included on the projects.

Child Hope Foundation

Child Hope Foundation is a child advocacy foundation that pairs compassionate people with those who are suffering from poverty. Their volunteer placements include computer training for Masai girls, assisting health professionals, Serengeti wildlife conservation, and teaching.
Where: Both urban and rural Tanzania, including Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and Tanga.
Accommodation & Costs: Volunteers live with a local home-stay family or in a hostel with three meals a day provided. Programme fees start at US$140.

Other Opportunities to Volunteer in Tanzania
New Chapter Development for Youth (NDCY) is a grassroots NGO based in Mwanza gives travellers/volunteers from around the globe the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable children, youth, women and people with disabilities. Their programmes and activities, held either at their centre or in the surrounding community, include child protection, the reintegration of street children, peer counselling, sports, games, music, art, teaching entrepreneurship skills, and the prevention of gender based violence. To participate is almost free but they request volunteers contribute US$5 per day towards food. NDCY can be found via their Facebook page.
