Grassroots Volunteering in Hungary
The organisations listed below have either got in touch with us to add their details to this or another of our websites, or we otherwise have reason to believe they are actively looking for international volunteers and charge reasonable or no fees to join in, live and work with them:
Central European Teaching Program
www.cetp.info
Technically this is a full time paid job where participants receive a salary that is the same as that of Hungarian teachers but as your pocket will take a hit from the $2500 programme fee we have decided to include it here. This may seem a lot but when spread out over a full school year (September to June) or a semester and refreshed with wages of $500 per month it satisfies our affordability requirements.
Participants must be native English speakers from the US, Canada, UK or Ireland with a TEFL certificate and complete 20 hours of classroom teaching experience, volunteer or paid, before departure. As EU nationals can work in Hungary with minimal bureaucracy most teachers on this programme are Americans but shut out Brits can be expected to apply in increasing numbers. CETP sometimes have primary schools in small communities who will take a teacher without a 4 year degree if they satisfy the other requirements.
Where: Schools all over Hungary.
Accommodation & Costs: $2500 for one school year, or $1800 for one semester, plus a work visa fee of up to $180 depending on nationality. Furnished housing, primarily in Soviet style flats, is provided, along with wages.
