Blogs And Websites For Tips By House Sitters

Sipping a mojito on a tropical veranda with a rent-a-cat trying to snuggle up onto the keyboard of their laptops, these travellers are in the know about what it takes to write a kickass profile. They enjoy rent free accommodation and leave both Fido and the ficus plants alive and well when they move on to their next house sitting gig.

Chris and Suze

When Suze applied for a customer service role at Brighton-based house and pet sitting company, Trusted Housesitters, a year’s free membership came as part of the application process. Though her application was unsuccessful they used their membership to good effect to do what they love most – take care of animals and spend their time together. They have their own pet sitting business and are booked up for the whole of 2022.

Sam and Veren

Leaving New York in 2016 after realising that it will be cheaper to travel than live in one of the most expensive cities in the world, Sam and Veren have house sat all over the US and Europe. Another sit saw them in an off grid, solar powered house in the Caribbean taking care of 17 animals. They have a book on their experiences and strategies, plus a podcast.

Amy and Andrew

Quitting their jobs in 2013, Amy and Andrew booked one way flights to New Zealand, leaving London to travel the world indefinitely. Whenever they return to the UK, they can afford to stay in the capital through house sitting, and have cared for pigs as well as cats and dogs. They credit their experience volunteering with animal shelters as part of the reason for landing house sitting gigs around the world.

Charlie and Luke

Charlie Marchant and partner Luke have never used a house sitting website to find sits in Central America. Instead, they prefer to use expat groups and forums, or word of mouth and their own dedicated house sitting website. In their first year of house sitting they looked after homes in Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua, including one with 11 dogs.

Laura and Tanbay

An Anglo-German couple, Laura and Tanbay use house sitting to travel both luxuriously and cheaply. Their first house sits were in Australia, where they saved a fortune on accommodation during their nine months in the country, and have since looked after properties in a number of countries including the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland, Greece and Portugal. They have put together a guide for first time house sitters in Australia and have appeared in the Daily Mail and on TV.

Charli and Ben

When we saw their tweet that they had been living rent-free in the Caribbean for the last ten months and had three more house sitting assignments booked we decided to investigate Charli and Ben’s site, where found numerous great posts, including reasons to house sit at Christmas and creating a successful house sitting application. Though they say they no longer crave an apartment in the city since they left the UK in 2010, they do enjoy stepping into the shoes of foreign home owners to try out life in their corner of the world.

Nick and Dariece

House sitting plays an important role in keeping these goats on the road. Within a month of putting up their house sitting profile, they landed a seven month sit in Grenada, saving thousands of dollars in accommodation costs and using the time to build their website and form partnerships with tourism boards in Greece, Argentina, Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan.

Dalene and Pete

A Canadian couple, Dalene and Pete climbed the corporate ladder until, in 2009, they sold everything and bought a ticket to South America. They become strong advocates for house sitting through their blog Hecktic Travels and put together an ebook, How to Become a House Sitter And See the World. Leukemia changed the focus of their blog more towards personal health issues, and they since have a more settled lifestyle, but many a house sitter cite this couple as an inspiration to give house sitting a go.
