Working with Street Children in Morocco

MOROCCO / Moroccan Children’s Trust

Moroccan Children’s Trust (MCT) is a UK registered charity aiming to achieve sustainable development for young people and their communities in Southern Morocco. Our vision is to create a safe and fulfilling environment in which vulnerable children, who would otherwise live or work on the streets, are able to thrive and grow. MCT coordinates a volunteer project in which we invite young international volunteers to spend time living in Taroudannt and supporting our social development work.

We coordinate projects run at a community centre (Centre Amane) that is managed by our Moroccan partner. In this centre we employ local people as teachers and social workers to coordinate activities, supported by MCT international volunteers, including: a preschool working with children from 3 to 6 years old preparing them for formal education; a variety of school support classes ranging from the teaching of French, Arabic and English to help with Maths, Science and many other subjects; a programme of sports and recreational activities; and a weekly support group for the women in the families.

All the volunteers stay in our volunteer apartment where they receive support from our in-country coordinator who is able to answer any questions and deal with any problems the volunteers may have. In order for all our volunteers to integrate into life in Taroudannt before beginning the placement; we offer in-country training which focuses on the culture and the language of Morocco. Volunteers are also paired with a Moroccan buddy who acts as a guide and extra support throughout their stay. During their time in Taroudannt everyone is provided with two home-cooked Moroccan meals a day which brings the tastes and colours of Morocco into the kitchen and the daily life of our volunteers. If you are searching for a beneficial and culturally integrated project then a placement with MCT is ideal and your work can really make a difference to vulnerable children living in the area. Taroudannt is also a great place to truly experience Moroccan culture away from the tourist trail.
