Prices can rise as high as a ski lift once the tourist hordes ascend onto small mountain villages for the winter, but if you are prepared to roll up your sleeves you can ski or snowboard for a lot cheaper by hooking up with these hosts. Payment is also offered by some of the hosts listed below.
Ski resort volunteering, Niseko Hirafu, Japan
These hosts run two ski lodges in the heart of Niseko Hirafu ski resort. In exchange for 36 hours of volunteer help cleaning, cooking, serving and clearing snow, they’ll provide you with free accommodation, meals and lots of skiing. The minimum stay is four weeks and a visa allowing work in Japan is required.
Join our hotel on the ski slopes in a small alpine village with traditional Austrian culture in Flachau, Austria
Bed, breakfast, payment and access to 210 kilometres of slopes and 70 ski lifts is available to passionate skiers willing to help this hotel with breakfast preparation and housekeeping. The hotel is described as a perfect place for partying and après ski. Two more paid positions with businesses in the Austrian Alps can be found here and here.
Help out at a ski resort in Rhône-Alpes, France
Situated right at the bottom of the ski lift in Saint Martin de Belleville, you will have plenty of time to go skiing or snowboarding here. Payment is provided here too, as it is with this host that wants chalet hosts and airport transfer drivers in Morzine. Should you prefer a more traditional work exchange, only working for accommodation, then consider caring for young Léon in Val d’Isère – though they’ve found their workawayers for this year so we suggest bookmarking this one.
Looking for an English speaker au-pair/baby sitter who likes mountain life in a ski and spa resort in Bormio, Italy
An immersive experience in Italian life is offered to somebody who can help this sporty family – one of whom is a ski teacher – with the kids and speak to them in English.

If you’re the type of person who loves to be surrounded by a scenic and lively backdrop while helping people get familiar with an awesome town, this small hostel a bus ride away from two ski resorts is the place for you. Dozens of former volunteers have left glowing reviews for what is described as a laid back job for four to five hours a day, five days a week. A private or shared room, depending on availability, food and payment is given in return.
Assist us with child care and house or yard tasks while exploring Central Vancouver islands, Canada
Living ten minutes to the base of their local ski hill, these hosts have spent most of their lives working in the mountains, as ski patrol and mountain bike athlete/coach. They are looking for someone to stay three to six months helping with childcare and around the house, in exchange for room and board.
