Wine Tasting In Avanos
I have been cultivating an interest in wine drinking for a number of years now. After a dry month in Jordan I pounced on some good quality wines within my budget in Lebanon and was keen to rekindle my love hate relationship with Turkish wines.
Unlike the UK, where £5 will present a wine drinker with a large choice of decent bottles – I make no pretence I’m a connoisseur – in Turkey, this is less the case. There are ok Turkish wines but finding them involves a fair amount of trial and error with the errors coming thick and fast.
Unless you are looking for a drink in some of the more religious towns away from the coastal resorts, there is not too much that can go wrong with buying beer here. Though the choice is usually limited to Efes or Tuborg, both more than adequate beers, bar staff ice frost the glass to pitch the temperature just right for an afternoon’s drinking in view of the sea. But order a glass of white wine and it is not uncommon to be presented with a yellowed liquid poured with a flourish from a bottle initially opened the previous season.
In Avanos they treat wine drinkers better including doling out free samples from some of the vineyards in the region. Establishments in this Cappadocian town use demonstrations and museums to attract business to their craft stores so we allowed ourselves to be lured into a cave to sample some regional wines at Yöresel Şarap Evi (Camii Kebir Mahallesi Kadı Sok.
