Volunteer Needed to Help to Preserve Endagered Species of Peccary in Brazil

BRAZIL / Kaya Responsible Travel

Volunteer in Brazil on a conservation project in the Pantanal to help protect the white-lipped peccary from extinction. In recent years, there have been a number of detrimental effects to both the white-lipped peccary and the collared peccaries due largely to local habitat fragmentation. This project works to implement various strands of research in order to gain a greater understanding of the direct and indirect impact of a changing cattle industry on key species within the Pantanal. Wasteful and inept management practices are now placing a much greater strain on a number of natural resources within the Brazilian Pantanal which unfortunately are suffering harmful habitat alterations including a decline in a number of important wildlife species. By comparing unspoiled regions with cattle-impacted sites, this project works to identify biodiversity losses and recommends measures for local habitat restoration, as well as generating technical tools to improve the cattle ranchers’ management practices. In effect, this project is tirelessly working to develop traditional landowners practices within their own limitations and effectively increase biodiversity on their own land.

Volunteer activities will vary depending on the needs of the project at any given time. Generally, the duties that need support and assistance include monitoring the peccary, capturing data, setting camera traps – also for continual monitoring, conducting a fruit and vegetation census, animal capture, tagging and tracking, as well as some community support work – there is a girls soccer team close by as well as the option to help out with tasks in the local school. Providing environmental education to local community members is essential, this new generation have the greatest potential to implement a real sustainable difference in the future so a side arm of this project works to engage various groups with additional knowledge about conservation issues in the Pantanal.
