Volunteer in the Barra Honda National Park in Costa Rica

COSTA RICA / Tropical Adventures Foundation

Barra Honda National Park is located in the Province of Guanacaste about 15 miles northeast of the city of Nicoya. Barra Honda is a very unique park in Costa Rica where you’ll find deep, subterranean caverns. Though there are other parks in Costa Rica where you’ll find caverns, Barra Honda is unique because of the types of formations found here. Barra Honda is also famous for having the best views in the whole Province of Guanacaste.

Right now only the Terciopelo cavern is open to the public. Its conditions are perfect for decent and experimentation. It’s ideal for adventure tourism, yet it’s relatively undiscovered. They are currently receiving over 2,000 visitors to the park each year. Volunteers at Barra Honda will assist with trail maintenance, tourists assistance, fire control, sign creation and maintenance, environmental education, building maintenance and construction or general cleaning and maintenance. The staff provide comfortable lodge-style accommodations, as well as three meals daily. Basically, what you’re asked to do is to help out with whatever the park needs for help at that time.

Our three main projects we need volunteer help with are currently:
Butterfly Research – capturing butterflies, building traps, identifying and categorizing them.
Bat Research – capturing and labeling them, and observing their behavior.
Motion sensor cameras – installing cameras in the park which capture pictures of wildlife, as well as classifying the pictures.
