Volunteer and Campaign for Women’s Rights, Kathmandu Nepal

NEPAL / Kaya Responsible Travel

By volunteering in Nepal, you can help empower local women by letting them know their rights and privileges. Marriage comes early in Nepal and as an example, women born in the late 1970s on average were married by the age of 16. What is more, early motherhood is particularly dangerous. Nepal is the “deadliest place in the world to give birth outside Afghanistan and a clutch of countries in sub-Saharan Africa,” due to the fact that only about 1 in 5 births are attended by trained health personnel. Against the backdrop of these issues, and with a female literacy rate of 35%, our women’s foundation works every day to address these imbalances and the foundation provides a holistic approach to addressing the inequalities between women and men. They continually lobby the government to change their laws whilst also providing help to single women who are at risk from poverty, discrimination, violence and to empower them by empowering their own lives and that of their children’s, through education and skills training for income generating activities.

There are many areas of the foundation that volunteers can help in. The area that requires the most help is in the office by correcting official letters or proposals for fundraising. Volunteers can also work in Women and Children centres providing general care and education. Other areas that volunteers can become involved with depending on their skills and background, are outreach projects in rural areas, skills training such as dying yarn and wool and spinning yarns and threads and assistance at a production centre that produces products which are sold as a means of support for the women and projects.
