ZIMBABWE / Kaya Responsible Travel
Volunteer in Zimbabwe and work on a project that brings together a number of small community initiatives in the town of Victoria Falls. Primarily the project centres around the schools of the area where the lack of funding and resources often sees 50 children being assigned to each teacher. Each morning the focus of the project becomes the primary school for victims of abuse and neglect, where therapy and education come together through art, life-skills learning and sport. Other times volunteers assist teachers in overcrowded classrooms helping them to conduct their lessons and provide additional attention for those who are struggling or want further explanation. You will also be able to spend your time getting involved with the building and renovation of buildings and school grounds.
Outside the schools, the project supports elderly care homes in building and maintenance work as well as spending time reading to those with impaired vision and taking part in games and activities. Once a week the project supports an HIV/AIDS support group in developing a nutrition garden.
This project has a diverse range of activities that you can become involved with. At the schools, you will assist in classrooms to provide attention to those who are either struggling and need extra help or those enthusiastic students who want to understand more on a topic. You may assist in sports and also in building, repairing or maintaining parts of the school, the furniture and its grounds. At the school for abused children over 60 kids are cared for and volunteers take part in team-building, gardening and skill development activities as well as art therapy session, HIV education and more maintenance work, as well providing them attention and care. At the elderly home, volunteers are needed to read to those who have lost their sight and play games to get the residents active (physically and mentally). And in the nutrition garden, volunteers will help build and nurture a plot where herbs and vegetables will be grown to provide added nutrition for those living with HIV/AIDS.
