NEPAL / Kaya Responsible Travel
Help on this fascinating project that offers volunteers a unique insight into the lives of young Buddhist monks in Nepal. This project places volunteers inside monasteries to help the young monks, aged 10 to 21, learn English.
It is common in Nepal for the males of the family to spend at least some time as a monk in their lifetime. Many of these will not have learned any English during their childhood yet many academic texts used in the monastery require some English knowledge, as well as the ability to speak to the global community in sharing their research and educating others. The English department is always looking for assistance with classes and for conversational practice and volunteers on this project often find great understanding of the religion and philosophy of Nepalese culture.
Volunteers conduct their own classes aided by the monks who have good English skills who help to act as a mediators between volunteers and monks with lower levels of conversational English. Classes are divided according to the monks level of English. You will be in charge of the class so it is largely up to you how you choose to conduct the lesson – don’t be afraid to be creative!
