The organization supports around 80 children in Xela and the rural areas, enabling them to participate in the education system. To reduce the main problems within the family, which are mainly lacks of financial means, they provide scholarships for the school fees, school materials and uniforms. Furthermore the pupils can receive tutoring on three to four days a week. Besides the educational aims they pursue hygienic and health objectives: For example the families can get escorted to medical consultations, receive financial aid and information about health, hygiene and nutrition. To ensure the families have enough food, the organization distributes seeds and dung to the families to grow them in their gardens and fields. And to contribute something positive to the situation of illiteracy in Guatemala they provide reading and writing lessons to the mothers.
Tasks:
• Helping with homework, offering additional tutoring for the children (one-on-one or in group)
• Providing literacy training for the women
• Supporting the organization of various events during the year (workshops, family reunions, recreational day, etc.)
• Accompanying the coordinators during family and school visits
• Assistance with administrative work
• Work schedule: flexible
• Vacations: End of November until the mid of January, Easter week
Accommodation, Benefits and Costs:
• You can stay in a host family in Xela (from 65 US$ / week including food)
• Proyecto Mosaico books your lodging, Spanish school and your transportation from the airport, furthermore we offer individual assistance provided by the office in Granada before, throughout and after your stay
• For our work and our services we ask a one-time-only fee of 250€ – regardless of the length of your stay
Requirements:
• Minimum stay: 3 months
• Spanish level: Lower-intermediate level
• English level: English as a mother tongue or certificated skills would be helpful (TOEFL, ILS)
• Skills and expertise: Experiences in the work with children, in teaching, social work or psychology (not required, but helpful), flexibility, patience, enjoy working with children
