South Africa has an enchanting mix of rich culture, beautiful coastline, backpacker entertainment and wildlife-spotting opportunities, making it a wonderful destination for travellers. However, many communities still struggle with basic education and finding steady employment to support themselves.
Two of our projects on the wild coast of South Africa, a computer literacy and arts project and education for preschool children, are in need of extra volunteer support. Kaya are offering a £200 discount for each participant joining the projects from April-June for two weeks, when 2 people sign up to go together. And if you can stay for four weeks or more, you will each receive £400.
You will be based in South Africa’s Wild Coast, which features lush mountains, sandy beaches and blue seas. The area is a popular backpacker destination, with the volunteer being a short walk from the beach, for watersports, and from local cafes and bars, where you can meet an interesting array of locals and travellers.
Work in a local children’s centre and pre-school for children aged 0-5 years. The school fees of the children are covered by sponsors and a hot meal is also provided at the pre-schools. This is often the only way to make education accessible for underprivileged families. The school still suffers to pay enough staff to cover the demand, therefore volunteers are essential in providing teacher support, around the week’s learning themes and use them to develop the children’s grasp of the English language. You will work on a one-to-one basis or with small groups of children, assist the teachers and lead and structured learning activities.
If you have a passion for computers or arts, we’d love to have you as a volunteer on our computer literacy and arts project, working to involve children from rural communities in educational activities. Through fundraising, grants and volunteer support, the project is working with 6 schools, managing 4 computer labs with 150 computers teaching over 1000 learners from pre-school to high school.
Your role will be to work under the guidance of qualified project leaders to deliver daily lessons and provide individual support for children in the classroom. Additional to our computer labs, volunteers will also become involved with running weekly art clubs and afternoon sports training.
While no qualifications are required for the projects, you will need basic computer skills to join the computer literacy programme and high energy and enthusiasm when dealing with children.
