Sports Volunteer for Development Projects in Swaziland

SWAZILAND / Kaya Responsible Travel

Become a sports coach and volunteer in Swaziland. Coach disadvantaged children to play football, soccer, tennis, volleyball, netball and more. Volunteer to develop sports talent and sporting opportunities for all.

The focus of the Sports Development Project in Swaziland is to improve the well-being of disadvantaged children and young adults within rural Swazi communities, through sport. As a volunteer you would help organize sporting activities and coaching for a few main sports – football (soccer), volleyball, swimming, tennis and netball and would engage boys and girls from the age of 7 to 25. You may also coach table tennis, golf, squash, mountain biking and rugby, depending on your skills and the needs at the time. The aim is to encourage youth to participate in some activities with other children outside of school, build confidence, and get some exercise.

Many children in Swaziland cannot afford to go to school and with the high unemployment rate (50%) young adults may be tempted through boredom and desperation to engage in criminal activities. Sport can add purpose and meaning to the lives of disadvantaged people keeping them stimulated, focused, fit and healthy.

Part of the volunteer role is to source participants including campaigns through the community to get youth to join sports sessions. Working on fitness training, involves anything from shadowing a trainer to taking on your own small team or doing fitness drills. Skills development is also important and may include physical skills to learning about responsibility and self esteem through sport. You will also be involved in preparing teams and competitions either with those attending the sport centre or you can liaise between sports groups to arrange matches and mini competitions and / or tournaments.
