GREECE / Skyros Island Horse Trust
We are Skyros Island Horse Trust a non profit org based in Skyros Greece – Our project is a conservation, welfare and education project protecting the critically endangered Skyrian pony in its homeland, a beautiful unspoilt Greek island, Skyros. We care for 36 ponies, 3 dogs, 12 rescue cats, free chickens and a rescue goat at the farm.
We are looking for volunteers who are motivated to support us with the running of the farm. All volunteers work about 2 hours either in the morning or evening shift mucking out fields and cleaning/filling waters. The rest of the working time is then spent either on team tasks, such as unloading and stacking hay on delivery days, or on tasks according to your skill set, for example:
– Horse volunteers – if you have experience with horses you will help us with hands-on work with the horses such as assisting with healthcare, bathing, grooming, handling/exercising/training the horses, moving herds between fields, feeding supplements. Opportunities to learn about ethical training, working with stallions, and alternative medicine.
– Housekeeping/organisational volunteers – to help with cooking, cleaning, decluttering, tidying . If you’re the kind of person who takes pride in keeping everything shipshape and running smoothly you will be an excellent help to the project!
– Maintenance volunteers – to fix and erect fencing, cut back greenery, white washing, painting. We are working with limited resources and land so it is vital we make the most of what we have.
The work can be physically tough , dirty, and is not at all glamorous but it is this work that is most vital in keeping the project going. You will need to be physically fit (or willing to get fit!) and be able to cope with the heat and insects, washing clothes by hand, living in a rural area . You also need to show genuine commitment, attention to detail, an ability to flow with the unpredictability of farm life, and a team mentality of helping each other.
You will also learn a lot about yourself and being present with others and your environment if you come with an open mind, curiosity and seeking purpose.
Shared accommodation is provided with proper beds, shower, toilet and small kitchen area. DIY breakfast supplies and main home-cooked lunchtime meal is provided. In the evenings volunteers usually have toasties or go down the road to the local taverna. Time off is spent exploring the beautiful unspoilt island – there is a beach a 20 min walk from the farm and nearby pine forest and historical sites – or relaxing with a good book.
