School Construction Volunteer Madagascar

MADAGASCAR / Azafady

Volunteers are needed to help Azafady, a UK charity and Malagasy NGO, improve access to education in some of the world’s poorest communities. Azafady has over a decade’s worth of experience in southeast Madagascar, working to improve the livelihoods of local communities and preserve its precious ecosystems. This 2-3 week project involves volunteers engaging in hands-on construction of a 6 meter by 12 meter two-room, stone floored, tin roofed, wooden school house, equipped with tables and chairs, blackboard and shelving. Designed for those with just a little time to spare, it allows volunteers the opportunity to assist long term community development work and still deliver meaningful results in a short period.

In rural areas of Madagascar the majority of the population has little or no access to basic levels of formal education. The communities in which volunteers work are some of the poorest in the country and therefore improving access to education is an invaluable step in the fight against poverty. All schools are built at the request of the community and construction involves the community’s involvement. Volunteers will therefore be part of a team of Azafady’s Malagasy experts, volunteers and the local community, all working together to provide better access to education in the area.

To participate, volunteers raise a minimum donation that goes directly to the charity’s work, with the hands on help of the UK team.
