´Zoologico Municipal Fauna Sudamericana´, established almost 40 years ago by Prof. Noel Kempff Mercado, houses an extensive collection of mammals, birds and reptiles native to the continent and is widely regarded as the best private zoo in South America.
The Zoo, located in the southern suburbs of Santa Cruz and covering an area of 70,000 square metres, is the largest tourist attraction in Santa Cruz for locals and tourists alike, receiving an average half a million visitors each year, and in addition to caring for its 25 species and 170 subspecies of animals conducts environmental research and education programmes.
By joining the project you will be making a major contribution by assisting the permanent staff and other volunteers in their daily tasks, including:
Preparing food
Feeding
Cleaning enclosures
Assisting in veterinary procedures
Visitor education and awareness
Ground maintenence
Publicity
Fund raising
Administration
Previous veterinary or animal care, and a basic knowledge of Spanish are an advantage but not essential, as these will be taken into account when allocating your duties at the project.
