People Powered Development

NICARAGUA, HONDURAS or EL SALVADOR / Volunteer Latin America

This project is looking for young people (British citizens only) between the ages of 18-25 for 10 week community development work alongside local people and grassroots organisations in Central America. Participants could be doing anything from running HIV/AIDs awareness workshops, to supporting women’s livelihood initiatives, to promoting sustainable farming practices. Participants will be in a group of about five to eight volunteers when overseas, one of whom will be a group leader. On return to the UK volunteers will use their new skills and experiences to plan and deliver their own social action project. This is a great opportunity to gain new skills and practical experience in community development. Spanish is an advantage but not a requirement.

Volunteers have to meet a fundraising target of £800 but everything is included: flights, visas, travel and medical insurance, medication and vaccinations, food and accommodation, a small weekly allowance while overseas and full support throughout the whole programme. Volunteers receive plenty of support for fundraising as well as specific training to help them prepare for their experience overseas.
