About Luoyang, “The Capital of Nine Dynasties”

While not well known in the western world, Luoyang is famous throughout the East, and not knowing about it here would be tantamount to a European never having heard of the Roman Empire. Throughout China’s thousands of years of dynasties rising and falling, Luoyang often played the role of cultural center and capitol. Evidence of this is plenty. Some of the oldest archeological sites and remnants of the first Chinese characters are just outside the urban districts. The first official Buddhist temple, White Horse Temple, is here as well as the first sutras to enter from India. The beginnings of kungfu and Chinese Zen happened at the local Shaolin temple. Here was a major center of translation of sutras from India. There are tombs of historical heroes who ushered in dynasties and whose battles are recorded in such famous historical novels as Romance of the Three Kingdoms and movies as Red Cliff. While much of China is caught up in modernizing, and Luoyang has modernized with it, the locals are still strongly connected with their cultural roots; they are proud of their achievements in Chinese arts such as Henan opera, calligraphy, traditional music, dancing, board games, local tea, embroidery, kungfu, and cooking. The culture here still exists outside of a museum. One of China’s three most famous Buddhist Grottoes, Longmen, is here. In April the famous Peony flower festival also takes place here, when the multi-colored flowers bloom all over the city and in parks, and are a nice to look at, as well as eat: the flowers are turned into cookies and candies. Luoyang water banquet, a 24 course meal using special local recipes, is also something unique to here.
