Leatherback, Black and Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Project, Costa Rica

COSTA RICA / WorkingAbroad Projects

Volunteer in Costa Rica and become a sea turtle volunteer, helping to conserve and protect the populations of critically endangered East Pacific Leatherback, Pacific Green Sea Turtles and Olive Ridleys. The project takes place in the spectacular Pacific coast of the Nicoya Province on the beach where Olive Ridley turtles come up in thousands at a time for this phenomenon of nature called “arribadas”.

As a Leatherback & Black sea turtle volunteer, you will take part in several tasks, including:

• Night beach patrols
• Assisting in the collection of biometric data from nesting turtles
• Assisting in the relocation of nests
• Day/night hatchery duties
• Nest monitoring
• Collection of biometric data from hatchlings
• Hatchling liberation

As an Olive Ridley sea turtle volunteer, you will assist with:

• Measuring the carapace (shell) length and width of nesting adult turtles
• Helping with data collection for master books (record time, zone, activity, etc. of the turtles)
• Supporting researchers with tagging and general checking

Other work may involve beach cleanup (to remove debris that would impede the movement of nesting females or hatchlings) and projects including the initial construction of a beach hatchery.

You can join for 1 week up to 12 weeks all year round.

Individuals, groups, students doing research and families all welcome.

Cost for food (3 meals a day), lodging in family homestay, internet access, programme materials and training start from £365 upwards.
