Abaarso School, located in Hargeisa, Somaliland (Somalia), educates the next generation of Somali leaders, who will help develop their country after a devastating civil war. Since opening in 2009, Abaarso has sent over 150 students on scholarship to top colleges and secondary schools throughout the world, including Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Brown, MIT, Amherst, Swarthmore, and many more. The school has been featured on 60 Minutes and in The New York Times, BBC World, and CNN Money, among many others.
Teaching at Abaarso: Teachers work and live in challenging conditions, but receive the immense satisfaction of knowing that their work matters each day, every day. As they learn about progressive teaching methods, they provide opportunities for students who would not otherwise have the education to pursue them.
