IT Support Technicians Needed to Volunteer Abroad in South Africa

SOUTH AFRICA / Kaya Responsible Travel

Volunteer in South Africa on the world’s first ever Fair Trade Certified Schools Project and work with rural communities on the outskirts of Chintsa, on the East cape’s beautiful Wild Coast since 2004, this project focuses on bringing computer literacy to the children of the poorest communities. Through fundraising, grants, sponsorship by Microsoft and volunteer support, we are now working with 6 school s, managing 4 computer labs with 150 computers teaching over 1000 learners from pre-school to high school – equipping schools with networked labs, developing teaching aids and support structures for teachers and pupils and teaching basic computer skills in the classroom environment. A new initiative in 2010 will see an ex-army land-rover adapted into a mobile computer lab to reach even further with their work.

Children for the poorer communities who do not have access to computers at school are immediately disadvantaged in their search for jobs in an ever-technologically advancing modern South Africa. Projects such as these provide the children with a skill that can lift them out of poverty and the success of this project is dependent on the ongoing support of volunteers, especially as the numbers being supported grow and the mobile lab is set up.

The primary role of the volunteer will be to work under the guidance of highly qualified project facilitators to deliver daily lessons and provide individual support for children in the classroom. Additional to our computer labs, volunteers will also become involved with running weekly art clubs and afternoon sports training, as well as get involved with both environmental educational and development in the schools and occasional maintenance work as part of the commitment to aesthetic improvement in schools.
