International Youth Volunteering Programme – Iceland

ICELAND / British Red Cross

The British Red Cross seeks to support those in crisis, either in the UK or abroad. The International Youth Volunteering Programme (IYVP) offers young people aged 18-30 residing in the UK the chance to volunteer overseas in another European country for eight to twelve months.

As part of the European Voluntary Service (EVS) scheme, all IYVP placements have a community focus, spanning a wide range of different services. All of our placements are fully funded, with travel, accommodation, health insurance costs all covered and volunteers receive a small monthly allowance to cover additional expenses.

This is the perfect opportunity for those interested ingaining valuable skills, having new experiences and giving back to the community. Experience and fluency in the language are not requirements, although the placements can be challenging and require adaptability and resilience. We’re particularly keen to hear from young people who are passionate about the work but may not otherwise have the opportunity to volunteer overseas.

We are looking to recruit three volunteers (aged 18 – 30 and 24 – 30) to support the work of the Icelandic Red Cross for 12 month placements (August 2019 – August 2020) in or around Reykjavik.

1) One volunteer will be based in Konukot, a women’s night shelter providing a safe space for homeless women across the area who may be suffering from drug addiction and mental health issues. Please bear in mind that this is an emotionally challenging role due to the personal situations of the women involved. This placement is only open to female applicants aged 24-30.

2) The second volunteer will be helping the social support part of the Icelandic Red Cross’ asylum seekers programme. They will help plan and run activities for adults and children, helping to reduce social exclusion and to create a positive experience in Iceland right from the beginning.

3) The final volunteer will support staff and volunteers in the refugee programme, helping to facilitate an “Open House” for refugees seeking assistance with a wide range of queries. Like the asylum seeker project, the volunteer will help run activities to help reduce social isolation and to create a positive atmosphere.
