BELIZE / Kaya Responsible Travel
In Belize the law states that children must leave the orphanage system at 16, meaning many are forced onto the street unprepared and not able to take care of themselves.
Kaya work with a team of local coordinators who run a project to build sustainable homes from environmentally friendly materials, that act as half-way houses for 16-18 year olds.
The aim is to not only provide them with somewhere safe to stay, but to include them in a community environment, and teach them skills such as cooking, that will help them be self-reliant when the time comes to fend for themselves.
Our current project does great work, but the work is slow with volunteers coming and going. We are looking for final push to complete the houses, and therefore are recruiting a team of around 40 volunteers to spend 2 weeks with us over Christmas, either as a stop off on your traveling route, or just as a new challenge for your holidays.
Volunteers are rewarded with the satisfaction of seeing the job completed and giving these children new homes for the new year, and with festive celebrations with the local community. Including a carol service, Christmas dinner and a New Year’s Eve party, allowing you to share a little of their culture along the way.
