Project Description:
The Iracambi GIS project is mapping a 200 square kilometer project area of rainforest and smallholder farms. The results of this project are being put to work in the first ever-local county land management program. You can read more about this on the Iracambi GIS website http://www.iracambi.com/I_GIS/

We want to develop and produce a comprehensive coverage of topographical and land use maps for the whole of the nine county Serra do Brigadeiro Development Territory. The project also aims to identify existing land resources and land use patterns, especially those of high conservation priority. All the information we get from the mapping is then put on to our GIS. We need people who can map the area using GPS.

Volunteer Role:
Coordinate the Iracambi GIS project if there is no present coordinator.

Database Management.

Assist Coordinators and volunteers with maps they need, or need to be created.

Maintenance of the I-GIS master guidelines.

Volunteer Requirements:
Portuguese an advantage but not essential

Proficient in using ArcView software

Patience, good organizational and communication skills.

Willingness to trudge through the forest with GPS in hand!

Volunteers should be very pro-active, self-motivated and seek to carry the program forward.

This position ideally requires a commitment of 3 months minimum, even better would be 6 or 9!

Program fees are $600 for minimum stay of 1 month and include accommodation, meals and internet access.
