Grassroots Volunteering in Belgium
The organisations listed below have either got in touch with us to add their details to this or another of our websites, or we otherwise have reason to believe they are actively looking for international volunteers and charge reasonable or no fees to join in, live and work with them:
Jane Goodall Institute Belgium
www.janegoodall.be
A team of office based and other volunteers help to spread Dr Jane Goodall’s message of respect for animals, people and the environment to the world. Volunteers are grouped into teams, performing tasks such as writing, design, photography, IT, proofreading and tree planting.
Where: Brussels.
Accommodation & Costs: Volunteers should be self funding.

Other Opportunities to Volunteer in Belgium
Serve the City is a global movement of volunteers showing kindness in practical ways to people in need, partnering with local non profits associations to serve people and create meaningful opportunities for volunteers to get involved. The movement began in 2005 in Brussels, where the focus is on the elderly, homeless, asylum seekers, disabled, children in need and victims of abuse. Another place where volunteers are welcomed to assist refugees is BELrefugees.
Click the appropriate flag in the top right hand corner for Service Volontaire International‘s English language pages. Mostly they arrange volunteer workcamps through partner organisations around the world for Belgians, but around 100 international volunteers are also placed in workcamps in Belgium.
Give a Day looks a little like a Belgian work exchange network – though for a shorter term as the name suggests – but without the benefits of being accommodated by hosts. Our favourite listing, that of chicken caretaker, does come with free eggs though. Other examples include handing out flyers for the Belgian National Orchestra, raising awareness about recycling at festivals, and interpreting. This will best suit people already living in the country with a few hours to spare.
