COSTA RICA / Tropical Adventures
We are looking for Field Assistants for our Montezuma Sea Turtle and Conservation Project for the following periods of time:
– 15th of June – 30th of September
– 15th of September – 15th of January
We’re interested in individuals with a outstanding love for nature, good people skills, leadership, self motivated, fluent English, “okay” Spanish, more languages a plus, with some education in biology, nature resources or related is plus. The person should be willing to work hard. Because our project site is very remote, thus a high degree of independence and commitment is expected from FAs.
21 or older
In good shape
Bilingual
Willing to work under hard conditions and very warm weather
Good team worker
Some knowledge of turtles, biology or related
Sea turtle work includes:
Conducting 3-4 hour night patrols,
Identifying, measuring and tagging all adult turtles
Relocation of nests into hatcheries or safe places on the beach
Daily early morning walks to count turtle tracks and check status of in situ nests
Monitor hatcheries around the clock
Release hatchlings
Conduct post hatching nest excavations.
Other important information
Beside sea turtle duties, other responsibilities may include administering food supplies and organizing cooking duties, mammal research and observation, pick up volunteers at Montezuma (3 km walk on beach) up on their arrival and explanation on the rules of the house and work schedules etc, as well as camp/hatchery upkeep and construction, which can include carrying heavy logs, shoveling sand, plant control and other strenuous physical activities. FAs must also maintain a friendly relationship with all other project volunteers and research assistants as well as members from local communities as positive social relationships are crucial to project success.
All project activities are conducted using the help of volunteer program participants and/or Interns, depending on the project. FAs are expected to orientate and direct project workers upon their arrival and motivate them for the duration of their stay with the project.
Salary / Costs
This is an unpaid internship. To provide you with three meals per day and lodging, we ask a fee of $200 per month.
