Egyptian Expedition Adventure Leader

You will be part of the team delivering the BSES Outreach programme and expedition – Project Rough Desert. The programme is open to disadvantaged young people from the UK, recruited primarily by our project partner, Catch22. Applicants will need to be available for the following dates:

Staff training 10th – 12th February
Adventurer Induction 20th April – 22nd April
Adventurer Expedition training 20th May – 27th May
Expedition 18th June – 10th July

During the training phase you will be required to assist in the delivery of workshop and training activities.

The expedition will take place in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. After a week of training and acclimatisation, groups will conduct a 2 week trek across the desert peninsula. Each group will be supported by local guides and camels. During the expedition you will be responsible for a group of 12 young people alongside 1 youth worker and 1 Assistant Leader.

Please be aware that this is a voluntary position however all expenses relating to the programme will be paid throughout.

Necessary Skills
• Experience of working in a desert environment
• Mountain Leader or equivalent experience
• Experience of managing group safety in an expedition environment
• An enthusiasm for expeditioning and the ability to convey this to our Adventurers
• Adventure First Aid Qualification (weekend training course subsidised by BSES)

Responsibilities
• Responsibility for, and pastoral care of, Adventurers in your group
• Overall responsibility for safety and adventurous activities of the group
• To train the Adventurers in the methods necessary to live and operate in the environment
• All leaders, must regard it as a priority to ensure the safety of each and every member of the expedition at all times
