Actuality Media conducts service learning documentary programs connecting emerging filmmakers and changemakers in order to tell stories that matter. Our regular annual programs are 4-week Documentary Outreaches with a focus on each student crew creating a short documentary film that brings attention to the work of their subject changemaker. Actuality Media is hiring on a contract basis a Documentary Instructor to run the programs in tandem with our Outreach Coordinator in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and in Kampala, Uganda.

Primary Duties: Supervise 12 young filmmakers (typically of university age) working in 4-person crews to create short documentary films; Teach Actuality Media curriculum modules in visual storytelling, documentary production, changemakers, and other topics; Lead workshops on lighting, sound and using the video camera; Editing – complete finishing touches on final films and upload to the internet.
Required Qualifications: Master’s Degree with a focus in Documentary or equivalent experience; experience teaching with demonstrable effectiveness in the form of reviews or recommendations; experience traveling and/or working in developing countries.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in building story structure based off of the Hero’s Journey; Experience with changemakers or social justice efforts; Photography experience; Spanish language ability. Salary and Benefits: Instructor will be paid a flat fee of $300 per week, to be paid in a lump sum every four weeks. The method of delivering payment is negotiable. All travel expenses to, from and within the program locations will be covered as well as housing for the duration of the contract.
