INDONESIA / Tir Na Nog
Gili Trawangan is a small island off Lombok in Indonesia. Lombok is the next major Island over from Bali. Its tourism has grown significantly over the last 10 years and is propelled by its busy Scuba Diving culture. The Island is surrounded by coral reefs and white sand beaches. There are no cars or motor bikes allowed on the island and the main transportation is by bike or horse cart. It is an idyllic island and has featured in many tourist TV programs and articles in magazines and guide books. Over the last few years the tourism trade has turned Gili Trawangan into a “party Island”. It is a regular stop over for visitors to Bali and from Australia. Its main tourists come from Europe but the Australian market has grown substantially over the last few years.
The Business:
Tir Na Nog Irish Bar and Restaurant has been open for almost 20 years on Gili Trawangan in Indonesia. Since opening it has been the most successful bar on the Island and regularly the busiest spot. Tir Na Nog is located on the main “central” area for business.
The business consists of 20 rooms, a swimming pool, a thriving beach front gastro style restaurant and busy beach bar.
Typical Day for the business:
The business is open 24/7 as we have guests in rooms and they need constant attention. The restaurant opens at 7am to serve the guests breakfast. The bar staff start about 10am and set up for the evening ahead and serve drinks to the lunch and dinner crowds. The restaurant serves lunch and has a very busy dinner trade starting about 6.30pm till about 9.30. The kitchen has last orders at 10 pm. Because the restaurant /bar are in the same place, music holds a key in trying to create an easy transformation from Restaurant to Bar. Ideally we get people to stay after eating as the atmosphere created by a DJ entices other people into the bar. The bar closes at 1am 6 nights a week and 3am on Wednesday, which is our party night.
Party Nights:
The island has a long standing tradition of sharing party nights. Seven businesses have a party night and for that night they can stay open late, 3am. On the other nights out of respect, business turn off their music at 1am. This allows places that are not normally busy to have at least one good nights trade a week.
The Job:
We have had western bar managers and have a western head chef over the last few seasons. What we are looking for now is a DJ who can also help out as a host/night manager for 12 months starting in September 2015. There will always be local staff managers and business owners on site to lend a hand and offer advice.
The chosen candidate will be given some on-site training in their duties. They will be shown our set up and we will be encouraged to offer some experience and ideas in improving our setups. The candidate will be expected to help out the smooth running of the outhouse side of things. They are to act as a host, talking to new customers, getting to know the dive shop students and instructors. Be a welcome face of the bar. Basically having fun and getting others to do the same. You are to be the welcoming face of Tir Na Nog. You will be expected to be somewhat of an events manager. New ideas for events are welcome. Regular ones such as date nights, Fancy dress Occasions, themed music nights go on but your own touch and input would be welcome.
A typical day would consist of coming in at 6.30pm and check the set up for the bar is done. Check the sound levels and line up some good music for the dinner trade. If there is anything not right to bring it to the attention of the bar manager and make sure it’s done. During the dinner trade to act as a host welcoming regulars and identifying new customers and saying hello. In busier times you may have to look after table sittings and get people to wait at the bar till a table is ready. Checking tables and directing staff to their customers’ requirements. At about 9pm you start easing the feel of the restaurant into more of a bar set up. This is done through lighting changes and music volume and tempo. By 9.30 you would expect to DJ and reading the crowd and enticing new customers to step off the street and into the bar. The music is finished at 1am but if it’s quiet then a local DJ may step in to cover the end of the night. There will be an entertainment allowance which can be used at your discretion to buy regulars a round or comp people who are waiting a while for food or unhappy with any area of the service.
On the party night there will be a few DJs but you would be the main one. At least one other night a week a themed night is expected to be organised. This could be perhaps a 80s or 90s night, a silent disco (we have headsets), Karaoke, Old School or a 70s soul night. When I say organise I mean get a suitable playlist together and let the office staff know in advance what will be going on so they can do posters and buy any props/decorations that may be needed. You would then promote it by word of mouth throughout the week and perhaps call into the dive shops and let them know during the day.
Traits needed:
Extremely outgoing and people person.
Quick learner.
Good crowd reader.
Not afraid to ask for help.
Not a homesick person. (You will miss Christmas at home)
Good communication skills
Experience Needed
Events management- good organisation skills and know how
Restaurant / Bar management- good experience with references
Versatile DJ (we use Pioneer Traktor equipment) – some sound cloud mixes should be available to hear.
Type of Music played at bar.
We are looking for a DJ who can read a crowd and create an atmosphere. People are on holiday so music has to reflect that.
Music that has gone down well before on the regular evenings has been Soul, Motown, Funk, R&B, Indie and acclaimed chart music. Some Latin beats have done well before. It will be your job to read the crowd and please them but this is a good place to start. Primarily, we are a bar so the main interest is in encouraging people to drink and chat.
What we don’t play is any Techno, Hard House, Euro trash, Garage, Gangsta or anything that is drug fuelled or hard hitting.
Remuneration: (Current exchange rate 14.500rp for €1 or 1mil Rp = €75) – This fluctuates daily.
The cost of living in Indonesia is a lot cheaper than Europe but saying that the Island (because of tourism) is not a cheap as mainland Indonesia. The Job is a six day week. Day off is not to include the Wednesday night and must be agreed on beforehand with the management on duty. 4 weeks paid leave can be used at your discretion upon approval by management (max 2 weeks at same time).
* All food included (fish bbq, Steaks, pizza, breakfast, lunch etc.)
* Personal Drinks allowance 4mil Rp PM (40% discount after)
(Certainly enough for a few every evening and more on days off)
* 3mil Rp PM Contribution towards accommodation.
(Accommodation costs range from 3mil to 5 mil Rp per month depending on your standards)
* Salary 8mil PM for probation period of 3 months and then 10 mil Rp PM after that or before if candidate shows their worth.
* All Work Visa Costs covered.
* If a second year is agreed on we may cover the price of return flights home after return to Island.
This remuneration is not going to make you rich but is a very comfortable standard for western staff living in Indonesia. The year will enrich your life and be a life changing experience. Many of previous managers have gone on to do diving courses with friends they have made on the Island, gone on liveaboard sailing trips around Indonesia and taken up water skiing, deep sea fishing or golf. You get as much out of this year as you put in.
