HAITI / European Disaster Volunteers
EDV are currently working in Port au Prince, Haiti with local communities to recover and rebuild following the devastating earthquake of January 12th 2010. EDV’s goal is to empower survivors to direct their own recovery and create stronger, more sustainable communities. We focus on projects addressing problems identified by the community and foster locally led initiatives. By working closely with community members we can affect change that will far outlive our presence in Haiti.
Our projects include sustainable building, community outreach and development, and the support of local Haitian led groups. You can see more information of our projects on our website www.edvolunteers.org/programmes-projects
We are looking to expand our Education Programme in 2011 and have plans to build more classrooms to allow more local children to attend school. We are therefore looking for skilled trades people or “multi-traders” to join us. The classrooms are generally simple timber framed structures with tin roofs so carpentry skills are in particular demand.
We are also looking for English Teachers and for longer term volunteers to work as Project Leaders.
You should be enthusiastic and willing to be flexible as you will be working in a demanding and constantly changing environment with limited resources. You must be able to make decisions and come up with creative solutions to meet a range of challenges.
There is no minimum or maximum stay and we do not charge a particpation fee. You must however be able to fund your travel to Haiti and we ask for a contribution of $15 a day which will provide you with 2 meals a day and shared dormitory style accommodation at our house in Port au Prince. Alternatively you can pitch a tent. We have running water and electricity is provided by a generator .
