Day Care Centre Support Worker Needed, Nepal

NEPAL / Kaya Responsible Travel

Volunteer on our Day Care Centre Project in Nepal and help to provide much needed education and support to children who otherwise would be left alone for days at a time, or encouraged into stealing.

The project works to provide a day shelter for children aged between 6 months and 5 years old and to help them learn, grown and stand on their own two feet. The project aims to provide a thorough education in a loving and caring environment, essential for increasing their future prospects. Many of the children come from single or daily wage working parents, who cannot provide them with enough attention to stimulate, nurture or protect them during the day. Ultimately, if these children are left alone, they either suffer from malnutrition or are encouraged into stealing or to become rag pickers by their older siblings leading them into a dark and bleak future.

There are over 60 children who are registered to attend the centre with an average of 50 who attend for day care and additional schooling support. These children need the help, support and care of the Day Care Centre to prevent them from going back to the streets. This factor helps drive the existence of the centre every single day.

The lives of these children are affected by extreme poverty, and some are even abused by their parents, who are alcoholics and abuse not only their partners, but their children also. The Day Care Centre has been set up to provide a safe haven for Nepali children who really are in need and you can be a part of the lively atmosphere by volunteering.

The driving force behind the Day Care Centre is to provide quality care and education for all of the children who walk through their doors. The children have a thirst, and the centre wants to quench this by helping them to learn, grow and to discover how their childhood should be.

The centre offers day care for 2 different groups of children; those aged under 5 and those between 4 and 6 years old who are already in pre-school. As a volunteer, you will be actively involved in playing with the youngsters while helping to teach the pre-school children. The teachers at the centre are understaffed so you will be required to help out in the areas where they feel a need so you are being put to efficient use. A number of the classes are not in English, however there are English lessons which you can get involved with, as well as art, dance and yoga classes and additional activities at the pre-school which can always do with your help and support. The children are supported in two separate centres, which are next to each other, so it is easy to go between the two during your working day.
