Community and conservation volunteer in rural Malawi

MALAWI / Big Beyond

Live and volunteer in Malawi right on the edge of Liwonde National Park. Liwonde is a protected conservation area in southern Malawi and the country’s premier and most scenic wildlife destination. Through the park passes the huge and picturesque Shire River on its way from the Lake Malawi to the mighty Zambezi River, and either side there’s beautiful open savannah, palm trees and baobabs, woodland, hills amongst true African wilderness.

Our volunteers will experience the diversity of plants, animals and birds, including large herds of elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodiles, black rhino, warthog, impala, kudu, hyena, sable and loads more. It’s also considered some of the best birding in Central and Southern Africa with hundreds of species.

Intense human pressures have unfortunately fragmented wild habitats of Malawi and so Liwonde National Park is another island in a sea of people. Malawi’s increasing reliance on tourism and growing populations makes these wildlife havens of paramount importance. But the government here struggles to achieve the ideal level of park management and thefuture of its wildlife is under threat from the surrounding communities, with poaching an ongoing concern.
