Carer Needed to Volunteer with Children affected with HIV and AIDS in Mozambique

MOZAMBIQUE / Kaya Responsible Travel

Become a volunteer in Mozambique and work on a rural community based development project centered in and around the coastal town of Vilanculos supporting a number of different community development initiatives. Volunteers spend their mornings at a rural preschool and most afternoons conducting HIV education workshops in the secondary schools of Vilanculos. When you are not leading or planning the HIV education workshops, you will be involved in a number of other community initiatives, such as rural home building.

Volunteers visit the pre-school every morning to assist the local teachers and educate the children in creative ways. Volunteers teach in small groups of about 8 children and if they are interested or comfortable, can chose to work one-on-one with children who display learning difficulties or require extra attention. For the English classes, we are currently teaching a group of about fifty students, ranging in age from young adults to middle-aged adults. Volunteers are responsible for making the lesson plans which are always interactive and fun with the use of flash cards, games, objects and worksheets. Volunteers encourage active participation from the students by reading out loud, role-playing writing on the board, doing written work etc…

After spending the morning at the preschool, your afternoons will be spent working on a community initiative. Some of the projects that currently require assistance are our orphan care and development projects, our language club on Saturday mornings, home building as well as helping to paint the local school, assisting in beach clean ups, maintaining the farm at the preschool and also an opportunity for a cultural immersion day.
