DOMINICAN REPUBLIC / Supporting Guasa
My name is Siân Sinnott and I’m writing to you on behalf of Supporting Guasa, a small not for profit working for the educational development of the village of Ramón Santana and its surrounding area in the Dominican Republic. We are based in Sweden and made up of several volunteers from the UK, U.S. and Sweden. I was hoping you would be able to post a link on your website as we are currently looking to recruit some new volunteers.
We host several summer volunteer opportunities which (aside from flight costs) are free to the volunteer. We also include airport pick up and good volunteer support via Skype before, during and after the projects. I myself have volunteered for this project on two occasions and I now help to run the organisation and projects so I can vouch for the project. In the two years the projects have been running the volunteers have written blog entries to document their work which is available from www.supportingguasa.com/blog.
Previously our projects have included an English summer school and book club and this year we are looking to extend these to starting a group to empower young women (for which we have full funding) and a skills workshop.
We are looking for 3 to 4 volunteers to take care of these projects and work cooperatively with each other and the local community. The volunteers must speak at least intermediate Spanish, be flexible and independent and have at least some experience of teaching or volunteering. Experience of working with young children would be a bonus.
The volunteers are expected to be available for at least 6 weeks in the summer, to work between 3 and 6 hours a day teaching (Mon – Thurs), play an active role in planning lessons, keep a record of their work (via the blog, photos and videos), undertake travel to the local batey communities, meet and speak regularly with the Consejo a local community organisation and to keep in touch with the home organisation.
In return we offer free food and lodging, a three day weekend for volunteers to travel (at their own cost), volunteer support, airport pick up and a letter of recommendation upon successful completion of the project.
More information on these volunteer opportunities can be found on our website – http://www.supportingguasa.com/2011/11/volunteer-on-a-caribbean-island/.
Expires: June 1, 2013
