CAMBODIA / Inspire
Cambodia is characterised by breathtaking natural features, ranging from stunning mountains and winding rivers to beautiful white sand beaches. This volunteer project gives you the chance to experience the life of Buddhist monks and contribute to the community through construction and teaching work. Volunteers will gain a unique insight into the local culture and will learn about Buddhism, spirituality and the traditions of Khmer ceremonies.
Rural communities in Cambodia face a daunting economic challenge and new Buddhist buildings are extremely rare whilst existing temples are too often left to decay with the passing of time. Participants on this Inspire volunteer project can provide community support through construction and renovation projects. Just as important for the monks will be learning from you about a different culture. In return volunteers will have an amazing opportunity to learn about Buddhism and to become part of a special community which practices an ancient way of life.
As a community volunteer you will help with ongoing construction work and have the opportunity to learn about traditional Khmer building techniques. Other volunteer work can include almost anything from decorating Buddhist temple buildings to gardening. The other major contribution of your volunteer role will be as a teacher, bringing your skills and interests as well as different experiences and perspectives. The monks play a vital role in the education of local children and volunteers will join the monks as teachers at the local government primary school for a brief period every day. Volunteers will also teach the monks back at the temple, helping them to improve their English and communicating about your native culture.
Please note this programme requires a participation fee.
