UK / UK Consortium On AIDS and International Development

Communications Interns
March 2012

The Consortium is a member-led network of 80+ not-for-profit, faith-based and academic agencies working at the heart of the response to HIV and AIDS globally. Based in the UK with strong links to governments, international and multilateral agencies, the Consortium specialises in engaging decision-makers in ways that bring maximum benefit to people living with and affected by HIV in developing countries. We work strategically, by developing policy, identifying best practice and campaigning to influence the funding decisions of governments and international agencies. In 2011 it was our 25th anniversary year.

The Consortium secretariat is a busy, four-person team, which makes regular use of interns and volunteers. We need an intern to work efficiently and flexibly to complete specific Communications tasks. The post will be based at the offices of the Consortium.

We anticipate that the person could dedicate at least two days a week to this role and we prefer these days to be fixed. It is vital that the person is comfortable prioritising tasks with the support of a manager, and enjoys working in a busy environment.

It offers the post-holder extensive opportunities to interact with staff from a large number of UK development and humanitarian charities and to develop a good understanding of health and development issues. The role would be ideal for someone looking to build their CV with a view to securing paid employment in communication and fundraising roles. This is an unpaid role, though we can offer £20 a day to cover travel and lunch costs. It is essential that the person is available for at least 3 months.
Scope of work
Key areas could include:

1. Compile and dispatch our monthly bulletin. This pulls together news from the staff team and our member organisations.
2. Implement communications strategies ahead of UK Consortium events to ensure
dissemination of material utilising social media, the websites, video and drafting press releases.
3. Assist in ensuring our websites are kept up-to-date
4. Assist in gathering evidence of the Consortium’s impact, using questionnaires and through interviews with key individuals, building on the work we have done in connection with our most recent annual review and our membership care programme.
5. Attend meetings, seminar and get involve with different projects that the UK Consortium are involve with.
6. To be a good team player, contributing to the work of the office as/when.

In all these tasks you would work closely with the UK Consortium Team and under the supervision of Ben Simms, UK Consortium Director.
