Volunteer teaching at a village high school in western Kenya

KENYA / CHASE Africa

Chebukuyi village is located in rural Western Kenya on the Ugandan border. Chebukuyi is a newly opened secondary school – needed with the high and ever increasing numbers of children in the surrounding area. Situated within a poor village, where the main income is farming, the importance placed upon education is only just recently been realised. The school is fairly well equipped, but lacking teachers for the growing school population.

Volunteers have the opportunity to have a large impact on the early growth of the school, and an important input into the variety of subjects offered and the standard of teaching. Kenyan schools follow the strict Kenyan syllabus, but there is little importance placed upon the arts, literature and sports. Therefore volunteers in these departments especially would be most welcome, as well as in English and language departments.
