KENYA / CHASE Africa
WAKIBE is situated in Huruma Village in Mathare one of Nairobi’s largest slum areas. With a population of over 700,000 people living in poor over-crowded, unsanitary living conditions, there are many problems faced by the people here. On top of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, hepatitis B and malaria; HIV/AIDS is widespread and most importantly decreases an individuals’ chances of fighting off these other diseases. In slums however there is a severe lack of support available for those infected or affected by HIV/AIDS; and due to the severe stigmatisation of the disease- particularly affecting women; many never receive any medication, care or support.
WAKIBE was founded by Margaret Wainaina in 2002 after she witnessed first hand the devastation caused by HIV/AIDS and the lack of support available in Huruma village. Her mission is to restore a sense of self-worth to those suffering with HIV or AIDS to enable them to live positively and be able to support themselves and their families.
