Conservation Volunteering in Madagascar

MADAGASCAR / Azafady

Volunteer for Azafady, a UK charity and Malagasy NGO, to get involved in various aspects of conservation work in the Saint Luce region of southeast Madagascar. Azafady has over a decade’s worth of experience working in this region and volunteers become part of a specialist team committed to preserving Madagascar’s threatened ecosystems.

Saint Luce is surrounded by extremely rare fragments of littoral (coastal) rainforest, which represent only 10% of the original forest cover, as a result of massive deforestation. These fragments are home to multiple endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna; a staggering 96% of all tree species here are endemic. As such, this area is a global conservation priority. Azafady’s work here seeks to alleviate the problem of deforestation, and aims to protect these fragile forest fragments in a sustainable manner. Volunteer work combines practical, hands-on conservation research on endangered species of flora and fauna – in particular lemurs, reptiles and amphibians – with community initiatives and environmental education, building the community’s understanding of the complex habitats of which they are the stewards.

Volunteers have the unique opportunity to tailor their experience to their interests and needs throughout the program, and volunteers acquire skills and vocational experience invaluable for anyone studying biology or conservation, or looking for experience in these areas.

Individuals can join for 2,4,6,8 or 10 weeks all year round. To participate, volunteers fundraise a minimum donation (amount dependent on length of program) with the hands on help of the UK team, all of which goes directly to the charity’s work.
