FIJI / Global Vision International
Volunteers will travel to indigenous villages to assess and solve water shortage issues, focusing on the design, construction, and installation of rainwater collection systems. The long term goal is to increase the water collection capacity throughout 27 villages across the Yasawa Island chain. Many of these villages experience severe water shortages, especially during the dry season. The project is run in partnership with local communities and The Yasawa Trust Foundation, who aim to improve the provision of basic needs in the Yasawa Islands. Based out of an idyllic beachside field camp, volunteers will be able to dive, snorkel, become immersed in Fijian culture, and explore other island chains on the weekend.
How this program makes a difference
The Yasawa Islands, although stunning, have had few sources of income. The Yasawa villages have been identified by our local partners and the Ba Provincial Council, whose administration the islands fall under, as being in need of assistance with water supply systems, sustainable power solutions, and resource management education. Many villages do not have access to a constant supply of fresh water, have no power or rely on diesel generation for power, lack a sustainable source of income, and would benefit from further education in resource management. GVI has been invited by The Yasawa Trust Foundation to assist local efforts to address these basic needs. Volunteers will assist with the assessment of village needs (initially prioritising those to do with water), have a hand in the design of solutions and related logistics and play an important role in the implementation of identified solutions.
