Volunteer in a Public Hospital in Nepal

NEPAL / Kaya Responsible Travel

Volunteer in Asia and help the government provide adequate health services for the rural communities in Nepal. Hundreds of thousands of Nepali people are estimated to suffer unnecessarily due to lack of basic health care. Working at a hospital or clinic is an opportunity to provide a much needed service and learn firsthand about basic healthcare in a third world country. The volunteer’s medical knowledge, skills, background and experience will determine their responsibilities, but all areas of the hospital need help. Qualified doctors and nurses and more experienced medical students also get the chance to assist travelling doctors which involves diagnosing and treating the local people.

During the course of your daily rotation you will have the opportunity to spend time in every facet of the hospital’s services including x-ray, lab, in-patient wards, OBGYN, ECG, dental, eye-care, pre and post op. Your level of involvement in these areas will depend upon your experience and background. For unqualified volunteers with less experience your role may be more observational than hands-on. Nonetheless, the placement still offers a fantastic insight into how the health care system in a Third World country works, and you will still learn a great deal; the doctors love to quiz and challenge volunteers on a daily basis and they will regularly ask you to offer your thoughts on the diagnosis or treatment of patients.

Qualified professionals with experience in certain areas may focus on their area of expertise if they wish.
