SOUTH AFRICA / Kaya Responsible Travel
Become a teaching volunteer in South Africa and you will based in the community of Red Hill on the out skirts of Cape Town in a small pre-school which has now been running for 10 years and has 35 local children who attend. These kids range from 2 to 6yrs of age, and mostly come from a Xhosa background. The school has very limited resources. The children are given 2 meals a day, breakfast and lunch, which is partially sponsored. Sponsors were unable to fund wages for the teachers and since 2008 the school was kept open by this program – with the wages paid for through fee’s paid by volunteers.
Children in Red Hill Pre-schools have a severe lack of facilities and are taught from containers that have been brought into the community as donations. As a volunteer you will work as a teaching assistant in the classroom. You will find that most of the schools have meager and ill-equipped facilities, but a wealth of children with a desire to learn. As a volunteer, you will assist teachers and contribute to our effort of providing children with a better education, in the knowledge that your volunteering efforts are securing the ongoing support of this excellent facility.
As a volunteer you will assist in the teaching, provide one on one tuition with children, organise special needs classes for those who need a little extra support, lead crafts and arts activities and help provide meals at lunch times. Other activities besides teaching will involve you fixing fences, windows, rebuilding work, painting and general refurbishment of the educational facilities. In the neighbouring high school they are trying to use volunteers to help them get their sports programmes off the ground, which range from volleyball, netball, soccer and rugby. Volunteers with the desire to help in this area are most welcome and wanted.
