Ways To Work, Volunteer And Stay For Free In Croatia

Guest Post

If the lure of the dazzling Dalmatian coast is too much for you, then there’s no time like the present to start thinking about a trip to Croatia. So what’s stopping you? Ah yes, finances. With a heady Mediterranean climate, endless sandy beaches and a lively culture, Croatia is a popular summer hotspot… But it doesn’t come cheap. If you’re not the best at scrimping and saving, then consider working a few easy-as jobs to help you earn your bread and beer.

Teaching English

Native English-speakers are always in demand, plus teaching a language also lets you meet and interact with locals and really see Croatia from an insider’s perspective. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certification is internationally recognized in countries such as Croatia, Thailand, Mexico and more. There are a variety of online courses to help you learn the linguistics and get you on your way. Not only will you be paid for doing something as natural as speaking English, but you’ll also pick up a few useful Croatian phrases along the way.

Set sail on a yacht

Sailing around Croatia might be every fun-lover’s dream, but imagine calling it your summer job as well. Sail Croatia recruits onboard representatives to focus on their guests and ensure satisfaction with their cruises. They also hire active guides to lead daily bike rides. Sail Croatia also work with photographers, videographers and social media influencers.

skippers, photographers and cameramen, or promoters, hosts and support crew can work on yachts in Croatia

Help the dolphins

If money isn’t a problem, but you’re still looking for something a little different from your usual summer holiday, consider volunteering for a very unique programme. The Bottlenose Dolphin Research Project allows you to participate in an ongoing research study into dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea. You’ll be educated on marine biology and conservation, spend your days on the picturesque island of Lošinj, and assist in any way with the dolphins. A rewarding experience that will stay with you long after your tan has faded.

Help exchanges in Croatia

Regular readers will be familiar with the concept, but for those new to the Jobs Abroad Bulletin a help exchange is a you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours arrangement, where hosts provide food and lodging to volunteers in exchange for help with their home, business or pet project. Money rarely changes hands and volunteers tend to pay their own travel costs.

The listings given below are suggestions only and were available when we updated and reposted this article in 2023

Helping near the most beautiful beach in Zlatni rat, Brač
Efra, a Croatian Bolivian multimedia artist, is starting to work on a new art project near one of the top beaches in Europe. Earn a room in his apartment by helping collect stones for a dry stone wall and clearing the land to make room for sculptures of dragons.

Help with childcare and learn windsurfing from a national champion in Kastela
Instruction from Croatia’s champion windsurfer is among the perks for helping out a mum around her house positioned near Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. A longer term commitment is preferred so two year old Leon doesn’t get used to people just as they are leaving.

Help with open air cinema film screenings along the coast in Istria
If you want to combine a summer vacation on the Adriatic coast with watching a lot of movies then joining this team setting up an open air cinema sounds perfect for you. They are looking for young people with basic computer skills. The work period is from June to August and having a driver’s license is an added plus. Payment is also provided.

Enjoy great island experience helping at a non profit in Losinj Island
Katarina, Sean, and Tinkerbell, the hostel cat, are offering life and work experience in the friendly atmosphere of their hostel. They can also organise free stays with other Croatian hostels as a reward for good volunteering with them.

Come and help our animal shelter for abandoned animals in Cakovec
Get stuck in with all the tasks that need doing when you are helping to protect, care for and find homes for about 500 abandoned animals.

Help a small family campsite in Dalmatia
Volunteers who can help with cleaning, checking in/out, and sharing information about the area are rewarded with payment and a room between the mountains and the sea in a non touristy part of Croatia.

Be part of our Hostel Team in Korcula
A short walk to idyllic sandy beaches and firm believers in island time and island life, volunteers here can relax and chill out or party between helping out on reception and with cleaning. A dorm bed is offered in return and facilities include a pool.

Tiny house experience in Pula
Returned from his own three year stint travelling, Luka would like some feedback from guests staying in his shipping container tiny home, plus some help with general maintenance, painting, gardening and cleaning. People who are experienced in working with power tools and DIY are always welcome.

So this summer, instead of coming back with an empty bank balance, let your holiday pay for itself by giving back to the community, the country and the culture.
