Gain valuable experience by working with institutionalised children in Romania

ROMANIA / The Life Foundation

Volunteers from all backgrounds will provide essential social interaction, respite care for carers and basic therapeutic care to children in state run orphanages.

All the people we work with on this project have some form of developmental delay, physical disability or learning difficulty. The vast majority also bear signs of Institutionalised Autism due the upbringing they experience. Although the situation in Romania is improving it is a slow process and our work there remains vital.

Our work in the Olt region is particularly essential now as the number of NGOs working in the area has decreased over recent years whilst the need has increased significantly. The aim of this project is to work in a way which provides the people we support with much needed social interaction while aiding their development.

Mornings are spent working in small groups with children with additional needs in their family group homes. In the afternoons, volunteers can spend time in a Summer School working with local Roma children or visit family type homes for children with milder additional needs.

All volunteers are trained in a technique called Intensive Interaction before taking part in this project. Over the past five years we have seen amazing results in so many of the children and adults we have worked with in this area of Romania. Volunteers must be 16yrs+.

Applications accepted until 20th Feb.
