NAMIBIA / Global Vision International
This volunteer program studies the ecology and conservation status of Bottlenose and Heaviside’s dolphins in the coastal waters of Namibia. The project is based in Walvis Bay, a natural sandy bottomed bay surrounded by stark sand dunes to the north and east and a Ramsar status wetland to the south. Walvis Bay is the only bay in central Namibia and the country’s main harbour – but is an important resting and feeding area for both dolphin species. You will join the research team in investigating how human activities such as aquaculture, port expansion and marine tourism impact the habitat use and behaviour of these dolphin populations. Days will be spent on the research vessel monitoring dolphin behaviour and movements and taking identification photographs to assess population size and residence parameters.
